Terms of Use

A short, plain-language agreement. No fluff.

English is the binding version of these Terms. Localized translations may follow as convenience copies.

Last updated: 28 April 2026

These Terms of Use ("Terms") are a legal agreement between you and Alisdair Mills Software, a Dutch sole proprietorship (ZZP) ("we", "us", "Qija"). They govern your use of the Qija app and related services. By installing or using Qija you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.

The short version: use the app sensibly, treat other people well, don't post anything illegal or abusive, respect copyright. We have zero tolerance for harassment, hate, or sexual content involving minors. Break that and your account is gone.

1. The Service

Qija is a music player and social listening app. It lets you build a personal music library, scrobble what you listen to, follow other people, share albums and playlists, and discover music and events. Some features are powered by our companion server; others run entirely on your device.

The core player and your personal library are free. Social features (the live feed, follows, mixtape sharing, push notifications, device sync, library matching) are unlocked by Qija+, a paid subscription. Qija+ includes a Circle of four: the payer plus three invitees, each with full access to Qija+ features. Slots are tied to Apple IDs and cannot be transferred or sub-let.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 16 years old to create a Qija account. By signing up you confirm you meet that age requirement. We do not knowingly accept accounts from anyone younger.

3. Your Account

  • You are responsible for the activity on your account. Keep your password and recovery code safe.
  • Your username, display name, bio, and avatar are visible to other users. Don't pretend to be someone else.
  • One person, one account. Don't run multiple accounts to evade moderation, harass others, or game social features.
  • You can delete your account at any time from Settings > Delete Account. Deletion is permanent and irreversible.

4. Acceptable Use — Zero Tolerance

You agree not to use Qija to:

  • Harass, bully, threaten, intimidate, dox, or stalk anyone
  • Post or share hate speech, slurs, or content attacking people based on race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or any other protected characteristic
  • Post or share sexually explicit material; any sexual content involving minors will be reported to the relevant authorities and will result in a permanent ban without warning
  • Post graphic violence, gore, or content that promotes self-harm or suicide
  • Spam, scam, phish, or send unsolicited promotional content
  • Impersonate other users, public figures, or organisations
  • Distribute malware, exploit vulnerabilities, or otherwise interfere with the security or integrity of the service
  • Scrape the service, abuse the API, or attempt to bypass rate limits
  • Use the service to break any applicable law
Poor behaviour is not tolerated. If you cross any of the lines above we may remove your content, suspend your account, or delete it permanently — without warning, and at our sole discretion. If your behaviour is criminal we may also report it to law enforcement.

5. Reporting and Blocking

Every profile and shared post in Qija can be reported. If you see content that breaks these Terms, tap the report icon and tell us why. Reports go to our moderation queue and we aim to review them within 24 hours. You can also block any user from your profile or theirs — blocked users can't see you and you can't see them. Our full moderation process is documented at qija.nl/moderation.

6. Your Content

You keep all rights to the content you create in Qija — your shares, comments, bios, avatars, and so on ("Your Content"). By posting Your Content you grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, display, and transmit it to the people you've shared it with, solely so we can run the service. This licence ends when you delete the content or your account, except for backups that age out within a reasonable period.

You confirm that Your Content is yours to share and doesn't infringe anyone else's rights. We may remove content that we reasonably believe breaches these Terms, infringes intellectual property, or violates applicable law.

7. Music, Metadata, and Third-Party Data

Qija plays music files that are on your device. We don't supply the music itself — that's down to you to obtain legally. Music metadata (artists, albums, cover art) is sourced from MusicBrainz, the Cover Art Archive, Wikidata/Wikipedia, the Deezer public API, and Apple Music (via MusicKit). Event listings are surfaced from public venue and promoter information. We do not claim ownership of any of this third-party content.

If you are a rights holder and want content removed from Qija, email takedown@qija.nl with the URL or identifier and proof of rights. We act on legitimate takedown requests promptly.

8. Qija+ Subscriptions

Qija+ subscription

Qija+ is a paid subscription that unlocks the social features described in Section 1. Pricing is €2.99 per month or €24.99 per year at App Store launch; annual plans include a 7-day free trial. Subscriptions are sold through the Apple App Store, billed by Apple to your Apple ID, and can be managed or cancelled at any time in your Apple ID subscription settings. Renewal happens automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Apple Family Sharing is not enabled on Qija+; the subscription's Circle of four is the only way Qija+ access is shared.

If you cancel Qija+, every member of your Circle returns to the Free tier at the next billing date, including you. Your local files, playback, and on-device listening history continue to work; the social features switch off for the whole Circle.

During the TestFlight beta, every Qija+ feature is unlocked for every user at no cost. No subscription is sold during the beta — Apple's TestFlight does not bill real money for in-app purchases.

Refunds

For Apple App Store purchases (Qija+ subscriptions), refunds are handled by Apple under Apple's refund policy. You can request a refund via reportaproblem.apple.com.

9. Privacy

How we handle your personal data is described in our Privacy Policy. By using Qija you also agree to that policy.

10. Service Availability

We try hard to keep Qija running, but we don't promise uninterrupted service. The app, the server, and any of their features may be unavailable, change, or be discontinued without warning. We are not liable for losses caused by downtime, data loss beyond what's recoverable from your device, or feature changes.

11. No Warranty

Qija is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we disclaim all such warranties.

12. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability arising out of or relating to your use of Qija will not exceed the greater of (a) the amount you have paid us in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim, or (b) twenty euros (€20). We are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including loss of data, goodwill, or profits.

Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes liability that cannot be limited or excluded under applicable law — including, where it applies, your statutory consumer rights.

13. Termination

You may stop using Qija and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access if we reasonably believe you have breached these Terms, particularly Section 4 (Acceptable Use). On termination, your account and content will be removed except where we are required to retain certain records (for example, payment records under Dutch tax law).

14. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be communicated in-app where reasonable. Continued use of Qija after changes take effect means you accept the new Terms.

15. Governing Law and Jurisdiction

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Netherlands, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. EU regulations — including the GDPR — apply where they are relevant. Any dispute arising out of or in connection with these Terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the competent courts in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, except where mandatory consumer-protection law gives you the right to bring proceedings in the courts of your country of residence.
